In a moment that captured the heart of the John Jay Youth Football community, sixth grader Jackson Kempa Nussbaumer was named the 2019 recipient of the Bryan Conway “Spirit” Award.
The award, given annually to a single 6th grade player in the JJYF program, recognizes a young athlete who exemplifies passion for the game, unwavering positivity, sportsmanship, and a joy for life that lifts up everyone around them. According to coaches and families alike, Jackson fit the description to a tee.
Those who have watched Jackson this season say his enthusiasm never faded, not in practice, not in the heat of competition, not even in tough moments. He was the teammate who always showed up with a smile, supported others without hesitation, and played with heart from the first snap to the last whistle.
The Spirit of the Award
The Bryan Conway “Spirit” Award was established to honor the memory of Bryan Conway, a beloved member of the JJYF program who passed away in 2010. Born in 1998 with cerebral palsy, Bryan could not walk or speak, but he possessed a brilliant mind, an infectious laugh, and a dream of becoming an NFL coach.

Bryan joined the JJYF program in 2006 as a 4th grader and remained an active and vital part of the team until his passing. From the sidelines, Bryan learned every offensive and defensive play, and with the help of his father and grandfather, he called plays using an eye chart. His play-calling led to memorable touchdowns and electrifying moments that teammates and coaches still talk about today.
Bryan’s story, and his unstoppable spirit, left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. The award named in his honor is not about stats or standings. It’s about character, resilience, and joy.
A Well-Deserved Honor
In presenting the award this year, members of the JJYF program described Jackson as someone whose presence made the team better, whose attitude inspired others, and whose love of football mirrored the very spirit Bryan Conway brought to the field.
Jackson’s name now joins a short and meaningful list—those who carry the torch of Bryan’s legacy by living the values that matter most, both on and off the field.
Jackson started the season by showing up everyday to our unofficial practices before the season started. He came in and he worked hard. He earned every feat even against the biggest players on the other teams. He tackled everything that was out there and this year he deserves our team spirit award. I could not be more proud. He's got a very very sharp future as a football player. Congratulations, Jackson!
