Just one season after pandemic lockdowns silenced the fields and kept students learning from home, Jackson Kempa Nussbaumer, then an 8th grader proudly wearing jersey #28, was honored with the Spirit of the Pack Award at John Jay High School.
The 2021 season marked a long-awaited return to the field—and for Jackson, it was a chance to show what resilience, teamwork, and heart truly look like. With no 7th grade season to build on, he came back stronger, more determined, and more committed than ever.
The Spirit of the Pack Award is given by John Jay’s football coaches to a player who goes above and beyond for the team—not just in performance, but in heart. It celebrates athletes who bring energy, perseverance, leadership, and unity to the field. Jackson embodied all of that. His drive lifted teammates, his focus impressed coaches, and his spirit reminded everyone what it truly means to be part of a pack.
Behind the scenes, Jackson’s growth was fueled by the steady encouragement of his mentors, coaches, and family—a team behind the team, always showing up with belief and support.

In a year defined by comeback stories, Jackson’s stood out.
